Female hair restoration

Understand why a diagnosis comes first in female hair loss and what to discuss before considering a surgical approach.

Changes in part width, hairline shape or overall volume can have different causes. For women considering hair restoration, identifying the reason for the change is a more useful first step than selecting a transplant technique.

Start with a medical assessment

A clinician may ask about the onset and pattern of loss, family history, medications and other health changes. Depending on the findings, further investigation may be appropriate. Hair transplantation can be an option for some women, but it is not a universal treatment for thinning.

Describe the change in your own terms

Bring a few photographs showing how your hair looked before the concern began. Explain whether your main concern is the parting, temples, front border or overall volume. Everyday styling problems can communicate your priorities more clearly than a requested graft number.

Ask what diagnosis is being considered and what supports it. If treatment is recommended before surgery, find out its purpose, how progress will be assessed and when the plan will be reviewed.

Consider donor and styling needs together

Discuss the donor assessment and whether the proposed plan can realistically improve the specific area that matters to you. Ask about shaving, colour treatments, extensions, traction from hairstyles and the practical requirements of postoperative care.

  • Is the cause of my hair loss established?
  • Is my donor hair suitable for the proposed procedure?
  • What non-surgical options should be considered?
  • What change in appearance would be realistic?
  • What is the long-term follow-up plan?

A decision at your own pace

You should have time to review a recommendation and ask further questions. Read our female hair loss assessment guide to prepare for the conversation.
